Yes.............don't buy it. You'd be better off buying a later bike ( 99-01) which will have revised headers so they won't drag, better gear change, revised 4th gear which is less likely to go bang and render your bike worthless and (I think) a stronger clutch basket although I could be wrong about that last point. All in all.....spend a couple of hundred dollars more and get a better bike with revisions which is much less likely to cause you problems.

I think that's a bit drastic RM the later models were better for sure the one I would buy out of choice is the 2001/2002 DSSA 146bhp model. But that's not an option here. I know lots of people through RAT, who did 10,000's of miles on there 595 with no problems what's so ever. There were issues with the 4th gear but you and I don't know how the bikes were being ridden Triumph's have never been as indestructable as the Jap stuff. I think the trouble is you're more likely to moan if it goes wrong. I as guilty of it as everyone else and on this site we do winge a bit from time to time. Mick the bike should be ok just don't thrash it you may have to run it in to you're ridding style. I had to with my TBS it was realy stiff when I got it first so I've slowly upped the pace on it over the last 1000 miles and it's freed up a treat some old boy had it never went above 50 mph I should think.

Barney , thanks so much. thats a load off my mind. I aam a fast but safe rider. no wheelies or stoppies. I don't understand people that do that to a good bike. i love the twisties that start 1/2 mile from my place in Boulder. I never pass on solid yellows and i do the speed limit...well that's my story and i'm sticking to it. My super III and tt 600 have the finest clutches aaadn gear shift. I 'm suprised to hear anything bad at all....so what's the deal with 4th gear? is there any kind of upgrade i can do BEFORE something breaks? this bike has 26k and my othershave around that. the only reoccuring bummer is the front forks on the superIII . BUT , i hang with guys that own light air craft and one of them is going to give me a product that they use in some aircraft oleos ,(don't remember the name right now )..but it maakes the rubber bushings swell and they don't leake. I'll get the name and post it. thanks again. mick

Most likely some stone chips on the chrome of the fork legs on the Super III damaging the O rings on the fork seals feel around the chrome leg for any digs or sharp edges . I didn't know anything about the 4th gear problem until I started posting on here and haven't realy looked to see what causes it . No one that I knew who had one had any trouble with their gearbox. Riding the way you do I should think all will be ok. I was coming out your way next year but Rocky Mountain Motorcycles have given up.

Only trying to help and tell it as it is. Just do a search on here for all the blown gearboxes and engine replacements then tell me I'm being "drastic" as Barney says. There's more than a few threads on clutch baskets too. Infact, if there was no problem with 4th gear why did Triumph modify the part and why do most people know to check engine/frame numbers to identify whether it's susceptible to failure? Anyhow...you asked....I answered....if you don't like the answer then fair enough.

I'm sure some people on here have had problems I don't doubt you, but when I was going to the kiddie fiddler events (private joke between RM and me I'm no a pedo) no one ever mentioned any gearbox problems on the early 595's the first time I came across it was on here and several RAT's had 595's. Mick they were based in Vancover and they took you all over British Columbia http://rockymtnmoto.com/

Triumph never officially admitted to the problem preferring to revise 4th gear and call in "continual improvement". Bikes up to engine no. 57946 were effected. If you are a Premier member you can read the buying guide here... http://www.t595.net/kb/te.....icle.asp?id=172 Barney has obviously been lucky in not meeting anyone with a bad 4th gear...as I said, do a search and at least you will be informed. At the end of the day it's all down to what you perceive to be acceptable risk but don't be fooled into thinking it's just a few owners bitching.....it's all too common.

No not a dealer but I've owned my 99 daytona since new, spent money on it, done track days, do most of my own servicing and have along the way learned a bit about t595s and their weaknesses....a lot of it from other users, mechanics and most of all this web site.

If it has a Pciii it will likely have a custom map too. It's worth checking whether it has, and if not it's worth an hour on the dyno. What's the mileage?

My 2p 1 Keep the battery charged. If not, you can break stuff. 2 Make sure the battery terminals are tight. Caught me out on a number of occasions. 3 Make sure the rear suspension goes up/down. (The bearings for the linkages don't seem to hold grease very well, and it's a pain to do the maintainence on them, so they get forgotten) 4 The pipes fall off the fuel pump in the fuel tank. Usually doing 80mph down the motorway. 5 If you have plastic fuel connectors, they will break the first time you take the tank off. Might as well order the metal ones ready. 6 The mirrors do move to be adjusted, but there is about 1ounse of force difference between them moving, and snapping off. Even then, they don't work so just leave them alone, or replace them with stuff that works. 7 Back brake only works when you are already stopped. 8 If the engine light doesn't come on, either it's the battery terminals, or the relay. For which you will need to remove the whole back of the bike to get to. 9 If you have an alarm, get rid of it. 10 Headlight bulbs are a PITA to change 11 Taking the airbox off to change plugs is a PITA. There is a bolt holding the airbox on at the front with is virtually impossible to get to. 12 If you drop it on the left side all the oil drains up into the airbox, and fills the cylinders with oil. DO NOT START IT. To clear it, take the plugs out and crank the engine over. Do this in the middle of a field, and don't look down the plug hole to see what's what! 13 If you drop it on the right side, the rear-most fairing fastner will punch it's way through the clutch casing, and your oil drains all over the floor. 14 Crash bungs are a good idea. 15 Yellow is the best colour 16 My 4th gear seems to be OK 17 My Sprag clutch is OK as well 18 And my Clutch springs don't seem to be rattling. 19 Read this newsgroup as much as you can. It WILL save you a fortune. Mine's an early 97 (registered April), one of the ones which had the frame replaced. Not looked at what the engine number is. I'd rather not know.

Some good points there Paddy... Quote: The mirrors do move to be adjusted, but there is about 1ounse of force difference between them moving, and snapping off. Even then, they don't work so just leave them alone, or replace them with stuff that works. | ...never, ever spray them with WD40 in the belief they'll be easier to adjust : the glass will fall out. Oh, and the breather and drain nipples that exit on the l'h side of the tank will doubtless be corroded and need drilling with a 2mm bit. crankcase mod is so easy.....everyone should do it

Oh, and the lens from an old pair of spectacles can be used to make an excellent sunroof for a tortoise in its shell. ....and changing the instrument bulbs for LEDs is so very worthwhile particularly if you have a couple of hours to kill ....slipping clutches can often be cured by fitting Daytona 1200 springs...and they cost about 1/5th of the price ....get your beef out of the fridge a couple of hours before you cook it so it can come up to room temperature and goose fat is best for roast potatoes.

... and never go to a bar called 'The Blue Lagoon' and ask a member of staff if they can help you to 'push your stool in'. and on a more serious note... Mick, never fill her up with oil more than 2/3 up the sight glass, you'll blow seals (and I'm not talking about fellating marine mammals) also, don't overtighten the chain (it needs to be 35-40mm in the middle - no less) or you'll fook the output shaft bearings.

hi guys. just got back from Los Angeles.that place is INSANE!!!!! SANT AMONICA PIER IS COOL AND THE OCEAN IS AWSOME and beautiful females in string bikini's are a PLUS ! ...........however you wouldnt believe the traffic. I flew in to l flew into L.A. EX on Tue morning and took a bus to van nuys. the shop mgr. picked me up and took me to the bike shop. Riding the TT-600's made me forget what a man size cycle the 900's are. it took about half a day to get comfortabe again...and there are NO SPEED LIMIT SIGNS!!!!!!!!!!and even in town the people drive 50+. the free way is like the autobahn.seriously.it was 90 to a TON+.ALL THE TIME.AND CYCLES ARE ALLOWED TO split lanes. NUTS!!!SOME FOOL ON A SUZUKIE ROCKET PASSED ME GOING AT LEAST 100 IN BETWEEN LANES, FOLLOWED BY A COP ON A BIKE DOING ABOUT 70MPH. the only fault with my T-595 is the seat is a piece of shite!, theres one head light bulb out, left side and the lower gauge lights are out. I went to Chino to the planes of fame air museum and ran into Steve Hinton a super star in the airplane world.he's flown mustangs, P-38, P-80 jet. spitfires , me-109 , P-47, P-40 ,jap zero's hurricane's .... everything. He replaced Bob Hoover as the starting pilote for the reno air races, which were Sept 10-14 last. if your into playstation air combat 5 he's the guy that gives you the museum tour at the end of the game. i'll post some pix if any one is interested in ww II air craft. to continue. I left Chino about 2:30 and tried to get to Barstow but by 6:30 I'd had enough. started Wed . morning and did about 650 miles then my ass fell off and I had to get a room in green river Utah. Now remember I'm expecting the bike to break down at any moment , fourth gear. (thanks red monkey for that!) but i ran at 100 mph + for about 500 miles at 5100 r.p.m. The bike just got in the groove and ran very easly. and all across utah there are no services and little traffic. some of the most bleak yet awsome beauty you'll ever see. It was like riding across Mars..had temps of 110 f in california and when i arrived back in Colorado it was rain, wind ,40 f.went right to my local brew pub adn showed off the bike and had 5 pints of my favorite beer then went across the street to my other favorite pub ,showed off the bike and had more beer.got home and crashed and woke up at 2 a.m. to the sound of rain and had to run outside and wipe off the bike and cover it.today it's rain and fog and 40 f..................the flight to california was awsome as well as we flew right over the GRAN CANYON....if you ever get the chance SEE it!!!!!!!!!!!!!but see it from an airplane, you just can't comprehend the size of the thing. o.k. my friends thats all from here , thanks for all the great tips about the T-595.oh, one last thing the mirrors are stupid, and dont adjust.i need to replace them right away.any suggestions?

Mirrors replacement, use a set of pattern ones for a Honda CBR600 RR You just need to drill a couple of extra holes in the fairing. Look great and standard, easy to adjust and they fold back unlike the standard ones.

jimmyi , i really have no idea, i may try to contact to owner ( i bought it from a middle man type of dealer) and find that and some other things out about it. yea, America is one big mother ! it was at one time mind blowing to go 400 miles with only 1 small town for gas or help. I'm so thankful the T-595 ran so well. hey have any of you guys done the ISLE OF MANN? If I ever get across the "pond" that and Normansy france are the two things on my list. I love watching the DVD's of the side car racers aand Mann....thos dudes are "around the bend" in more ways then one . thanks again everyone for the great advise .
