Hi chaps, first post on here so any advice is badly needed and much apprieciated. Right engine has been out, will start but won't rev out (won't rev higher than 6k) and the mal light is on. My opinion is that the limp home mode has been activated because we piped up the idle air controller the wrong way. Can i reset the ecu myself or does it have to be done by Triumph? Thanks in advance. Steve.

Hi Steve, and welcome to the site. Not sure what you mean by 'piping' the idle control the wrong way around? Do you mean the 3 tubes being the wrong way round so the ball valves in the tubes were upside down?

Hi, We just put the large three pipes on the wrong way (meaning the pipes were going to the wrong throttle body) Really i'm more interested in whether i can reset the ecu so limp home is not cativated any more. Cheers Steve.

Shouldn't make any difference which pipe goes to which manifold Steve. Without a plug and and fault code check it's hard to tell. You could try 3 warm up-cool down cycles. Temp must range by at least 25 degrees each time to take effect and extinguish MIL. Failing that you will need to plug into Triumph gameboy or TuneBoy diagnostic screen.

If you've had things apart, do you think you may have connected the air temp sensor plug and coolant sensor plug the wrong way round? This will do a similar thing, though the idle will be a little rough progressively getting worse as it warms. Had a couple come in like that.

crank position sensor air gap out of adjustment is a more likely cause. it seems to always cause this exact symptom. (homertrix should know better! i'm guessing life is busy..)

I'd go with crank position sensor but actually it could also be the throttle position sensor despite what Cerberus says....if the throttle position sensor is broken the engine will not know how far you have the throttle open and will therefore not deliver the correct mapping to enable the engine to run properly. This could either be toatl TPS failure and its resistance is delivering a signal to the ecu so it thinks its working, a badly fited plug on the TPS (has happened and is documanted) or maybe just nipped by something making it work but not correctly (has happened and is documaented).

The symptoms are exactly that of either TPS failure or disconnection. The ECU is only injecting enough fuel for idle speeds (as that is all it knows). You open the throttle and the revs rise; but the amount of fuel does not rise in relation. Therefore, its like the bike hits an early rev limit. You would get a MIL for this if is was disconnected or caput. The crank position sensor helps the ECU know where the pistons are so that it knows when to inject fuel and when to ignite it. The symptoms for this failing/being misadjusted are lumpy running, missing, pinking and/or simply refusing to start. You don't get a MIL on misadjustment for this item.

the crank position sensor air gap being out of adjustment has always caused the symptom of hitting an artificial redline at around 6000rpm.. but you are right, it normally would not throw a MIL.. ..though that could just be attributed to a sensor being disconnected with the key on..

Been there done that, Throttle Position Sensor is not connected Or fooked If you disconnect the TPS, the bike will start and run fine but will not rev beyond 6000rpm.

Good point Rec. As Steve had taken the engine out, I had assumed that an incorrect connection had been made between temp sensors. I was scratching my head as he said it was running smoothly, but wondered if it had been warmed enough to start running rough & missing which is what happens with the temp sensors switched. Hadn't thought that the TPS may not have been connected or damaged. I haven't actually tried disconnecting a TPS to see what happens. Homertrix descrition fits perfectly I'd say.

Time for an update. Had it on the triumph diag today. Error tps showed up. I also mentioned the cranks sensor and the tec said this could contribute. So came home checked the crank sensor it had an air gap of 3mm (shit). Set the air gap. Bike still lazy starting and won't idle until warm but will now rev out. So me thinks its still the tps playing up. Problem is they will only be able to do it in 3 weeks and i'm led to believe that a new tps has to be set up using the diag tool, am i correct? Great to hear you've found the problem Steven. Yes, need the tool to set TPS unfortunately. That air gap was definately a concern too. At least you're on the right track, even if you have a bit of a wait. Let us know how you get on Steven.

Another update chaps. Obviously the last thing i want this to be is the tps. So i have done a lot of digging and it seems my problem now could be the idle air control valve. The bike will start on part throttle but won't idle until warmed up and there is no mal light. Now i'v run the engine and unplugged the iacv and it doesn't seem to change anything. This would point to the fact that it isn't working no? Is it worth me changing it? I've checked it and it seems to work i.e the plunger moves when the ignition is turned on and all the pipes are in good condition and in the right place. If it is the tps then fair enough i'll take it to Triumph but i don't want them to diagnose the iacv when i can change that easily. As always your input is apprieciated greatly. Steve.

Does not matter which you change you'll still need to visit your Dealer, unless of course you lash out on a Tuneboy, then you can do it yourself

Final update chaps. We finally found the problem. Valve shims were all to f#@k. Done those and she fired up right away and idled. I should have done them when we stripped the engine but as its only done 16k and it was done at the 12k service we didn't bother. Thanks for all your advice. Steve.

Hello Message for Rec of Oakworth. My t595 will be coming up for its 24000m service shortly (ouch). Where do you get yours serviced? I live in Pudsey. I understand Cobb and Jagger are now Triumph dealers and Eddy`s Leeds are n`t. Any advice? Cheers John

To John Needham Service the bike myself m8, don't go anywhere near dealers unless I'm forced to. I've dealt with Cobb and Jagger in the past, seem ok, but there used to servicing Ducati's and there owners have more money than sense, so dont expect a cheap 24 k service, my advice is to ask first for a quote, but I hear its going to be around £400-600 for the major 24k service. The only tricky bit is checking and adjusting the valves, mine were checked (allegedly a few months before I bought it , I have the bill) but its on my job list over winter to check them again.

Cobb&Jagger eh, I bought my Ducati from them and they made my pockets bleed when it came to servicing and parts.....and they didn't do a fantastic job, didn't even wash the bike (which my indepoendant specialist does everytime he does a service)
