Take it carefully. It's really easy to get into trouble and tarmac is a lot harder than mud

And none of that death defying rear wheel steering round corners until you get used to the feel of tarmac.........plus you'll only show everybody else up (me included).....!!!!!

My only tips to an experienced rider would be, if you don't already, learn to do clutchless upshifts Also learn to corner the California Superbike School way (no argument please ).....be steadily applying the gas from the moment you tip it in as it really takes away the top heavy, flopping into corners feel that the triples can suffer from. Trailing the brakes into corners just doesn't suit the top heavy triple.

factory tyre pressures are 36 front and 42 rear. this is generaly regarded as a bit too much for solo riding. so drop to 32-34 front...and 36-38 rear, should give you more grip and better feedback.

Take all the slack out of the throttle cable and it stops the throttle being so snatchy.

Also if you've come from something with a big front wheel (I'm guessing a motocrosser acts similar to bikes with 18/19" wheels) DON'T panic and hit the front brake mid corner if something goes wrong. Big front wheels on older bikes let you get away with that sort of thing, the Triple will sit upright and carry on in a straight line - into the path of oncoming traffic. After years of 70s/80s bikes I nearly shat myself the first time I made that mistake.

to be fair as far as my first big bike goes i found the daytona very forgiving, able to use the torque and not so important about what gear i was in. as said before just take it steady, the last time i rode a cr250 mind it scared the shit out of me.

If you can brake mid-corner and get away with it you could easily have made the corner anyhow......it's basic physics

True - it wasn't that I couldn't have made the corner, it was the big pile of gravel the rain had washed into most of my side of the road...

Better off using the back brake in that case.

The main thing with a big heavy sports bike is to set the corner up before you get there speed and line use the road so you can see as around the corner as possible and as RM says roll the throttle on don't grab a fist full. With a 1000cc bike it's easy to give it to much after your 250cc. just take it easy and don't try to be Rossi or you'll end up like Stoner in a heap.

Louis, Unlikely you'll have any problems getting accustomed to the heavier bike. Dirt experiance is a definate +++ on the road. The Daytona has already had one crossed up wheelie through a turn and handled sweet as pie. Have fun! Brad

louis , also be REAL aware of the ....closing speed, especially in traffic as it's real easy to get over your head if your not looking out , remember the basic "look in your mirrors and check out the people in cars to see if they are looking in theirs...NEVER assume they are and always assume your invisable ...YOU ARE. dirt is a great teacher of how to use your foot pegs for control too. go slow and in a few weeks it will be natural .

Hi Louis, welcome! You don't say if you're new to the road or just big bikes, but if I were you I'd try and get booked in for a police assesment down at the local cop-shop. They basically follow you for a while and point out your flaws ( no, they won't book you for them...unless it's for 90 in a 40!!!) and give you constructive pointers. The best I managed to get on was a police persuit-riding course which was 2 days of terrifyingly fast roadwork...and it rained the whole time, where you learn to take corners faster but safer. Remember, on the twisties, they can chase down sports-bikes on BMWs! Though the best advice is very old advice.... "slow in, fast out" ie; it's better to set the corner up and find you COULD have taken it faster rather than getting too far into the corner to find you should have taken it 50mph SLOWER than you expected! From the police, the best tip I got was that your braking distance should be less than the visible road ahead. ie; if you can only see 50 yards round the corner, then be at a speed where YOU are comfortable braking down to standstill within 50 yards. Oh, and...Relax...enjoy...be happy! Triples are made to be fun! F

Hi there, Put new tyres on today,"conti roadattack" heard good things about them and took trevski advise on pressure, and it didn't seem so bouncy but again was told to take it easy on new tyres so i havn't broken any speed limits, but i have been accelerating a bit harder and then backing off but it still feels like there bags left. With the crosser you can lean forward and pin the throttle giving the rider behind you a face full of dirt but what happens if you pin the throttle on the tripple?

Once out of first you can nail the 955 as hard as you like. The front wheel may go light and even lift a little in second, but it's not going to suddenly hoist a minger on you unless you clutch it up or use the old drop it down to 5,000rpm then whack it open technique. I had a 955 S3 for two years and really enjoyed it. Great bike - you've got a lot to look forward to...

Louis, If you're weighting on the tank, it's pretty much the same, that is the rear tire spins tho' nobody gets a dirt bath. The main difference between riding in the dirt and on the street is the technique used in cornering. In the dirt the bike is leaned over, rider on the outside of the saddle more or less upright and the inside leg on the ground. On the road bike one leans to the inside of the turn and moves his/her feet to where the toes are on the peg...never, ever should the foot be on the ground when turning. Brad

Hi Louis I come from an MX / Enduro background , and have raced various Modern Fourstrokes, (ever ride Park Gate at Eastleigh? ) and now have a Speed Triple Cant see you will have any probs?? Pop on a set of Renthals or Pro tapers, makes it feel like a MXer only with 120BHP !! I would say be carefull, in that they turn you into a complete Nutter. Wheeling of the lights like your MXer feels so natural through the gears But will prob get you locked up for 2 years !

Did not know there was a track in Eastleigh, I know an area called Park gate but its not quite in Estleigh. Just for a knock around we go to a place in four marks, sometimes Ashdown farn up past Newbury or poppham is good if you like a lot of jumps. and have been doing track and trail enduro events but hav'nt been for a while.

Hey hey, had a good blast sunday. starting to feel the power of the bike. I love the way the bike seems to have two different engines, the averagely ok one under 8000 revs and the complete scycho f&$k me wher'es all this power coming from, one, over 8000 revs, good job it only goes up to 12000. Noticed a bit of a wobble on a couple of fast bends, i'm hopeing it was just the wind. hey big al i have seen that Daryl ride, he's reallyreally good!

Hi Louis Only just seen this thread. Agree with Froggy about the training. You may be interested in Solent Advanced Motorcyclists ( http://www.solent-advanced-motorcyclists.co.uk/ )who do a skills for life course which takes you to your IAM test. Haven't yet done my test but the training has certainly improved my riding. (And to my surprise it's not all hi-vis and pipe and slippers - been pulled up a couple of times for not "making enough progress") Probably a bit short notice for this month but they meet second Tuesday every month (tonight) at Sarisbury Green Be good to see a few more Triumphs along. Cheers John
