can I just squirt some 3-in-1 oil down the clutch cable or is there something better?

Hi Nick - I did that - disconnected and hung top end of cable vertical and taped a small 'funnel' made from a plastic bag onto it. filled this with 3-1 and let it gravity feed over about a day. worked a treat.

any modern cable will have the inner coated by some form of plastic and doesn't need oil; check first cos some plastic coverings don't like oil at all and it will make any problem worse.

+1 for no lube. The teflon coated cables do not need it and it will just end up collecting dirt.

Asherly --- I had a stiffy,

modern teflon inner sleaved cable, and using 3 in 1 as described above worked a treat - and a year on down the line is still pucker.....

GT85 is a PTFE spray - also non sticky so abrasive crap won't stick..

Teflon's fine when it's clean and dry - but it can eventually wear off. Mine was fairly stiff - hence the clean out. Had no problems since in over a year of winter/summer riding. If you want you could use the oil, then flush out with something like Inhibisol, and put a drop of Silicon spray down it which will dry and do exactly the same as the teflon. (similar to PTFE spray)
