Jezza, In town riding on my '98 w/OEM gearing (18-43) finds me rarely using third gear. I have put a 17T c/s sprocket on my '04 D955i and find it's a much better in town ride with little or no effect on the highway.

Smaller on the front and/or bigger on the back for higer revs - more acceleration - less top speed.
