Sprint ST (02-04)

Hi all fellow Triumph lovers,

I am thinking of buying a Sprint ST 955, circa 02 model. Are there any particular faults/flaws I should be looking for when buying privately? This will be my first 'modern' bike, I'm upgrading from a 1970 TR6C 650 twin!

Any help or advice for starting of down this new road would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks
AL

Thanks Jimmy,

Your absolutely right, safe and steady I think.

My wife has just passed her test and now has a Honda CB500s so she is finding her feet also. I think between us we just need to get some miles in and remember, the best brake is your right wrist!

IIRC the 955 ST was pretty much bullet proof. I haven't read of any major issues.

With Blizz pretty much bullet proof.
Very good bike and better in many ways than the new ST1050 and the 955 engine doesn't use oil like the 1050 never topped mine up between services.

Look for warped front discs common fault, the eccentric chain adjuster that you adjust with a c spanner, they can sieze if the chain has not been adjusted regularly.
Listen for any clicking from the head stock races.
Make sure the fuel conectors were done as well part of a recall.
If it's got panniers they leak you could keep fish in them they are that bad and they all leak.

Other wise good choice I know I had one a 99 T reg

Check the hidden connector on the left hand wiring cluster. It has been known to corrode, leaving one stranded.

I love mine dearly - leaky panniers are irritating but not a big problem (it all ends up in one place!), it's the leaky top box that drives me bananas. I think I might just drill a few well-placed holes in it all.)

However, my tuppence-worth would be to look out for pitted fork legs, leaky fork seals and sha**ed rear suspension link bearings. I'm not sure that the Sprint is actually particular bad, it's just what modern bikes do...

But the engine's bleeping brilliant !

I've got an ST

Thanks again guys for your replies. I bought one this weekend, '02 in blue, great condition and I love it! Chalk & cheese to my old bike, need to be careful it's got some ooomph!

Only one problem it seems to have a slight oil leak (well it is a Triumph). Is it easy enough to remove the bottom section of fairing, so I can get a closer look and whilst I'm at it, I'll do an oil and filter change? Andy

It might have just been over filled the crank case breather some times blows a bit of oil on to the engine if it's not been positioned properly it should be a rubber tube in front of the swinging arm.
Or the "O" ring on the gear shifter shaft weeps.

Fairings come off easy.
