Sprint ST (05->)

I've just picked up my new Sprint, a great bike. Question: has anybody noticed some quite loud grinding noises coming from the chain / transmission under light throttle conditions? You can almost feel them as well as hear them. I don't think it's anything serious mostly because I remember a similar noise/feeling coming from my 955 Daytona (even with new chain and sprockets). I have a feeling this is just typical back-lash in a Triumph box but the bike is brand new so I thought I'd ask around. Raffs will be informed when they perform the first service, of course (due in about 100 miles). I've checked the chain tension (OK as you'd expect) and I'll spray some dry lube on before I take it out again.
I'm fairly new to T595 so hello you lot. I live in Denmead, Hampshire and am looking forward to riding around on this magnificent ST. It really is superb.

A too tight chain is often the cause. 40mm of play is normal, far more than your average Nipponese thing.

Anyone with a PO postcode that isn't Portsea Island is most welcome.

Don't fret Fret, I'm not from Portsea Island. I only put Portsmouth as that's the nearest big city. I'm out in the sticks, if I turn right at the top of my road I'm straight into the countryside with great roads, lovely bends and superb views. Just right for riding a Triumph or even my favourite bike - a Norton Commando!

I know Denmead well, I live a mere 2 miles away.

I'll ask my mate John if you can have a go on his Commando.

Tell John to ride his Commando up to the Pub With No Name (aka The White Horse) in Priors Dean north of Petersfield. Sure you know it. There's some big meeting today at lunchtime - I think it's classic bikes mostly so I'll be on my big red 750 Interstate. Why not come along yourself and find me - I could do with meeting more Triumph riders. Been riding the Norton for about 25 years now so I know plenty of Norton riders. I probably know John or I'll recognise his bike anyway.

btw - thanks for the tip about the chain - just measured it and only has 25 mm free-play. Hmmmm... the pdi sheet from Raffs says they set it, lubed it and adjusted it. Hmmmmm. I think I'll slacken it to the 35 - 40 the book states. I'll let you know...... Thanks!

Check the headlight aim as well. No dealer ever bothers.

He no longer rides his bikes, no idea why as he has 14 old classics from as early as 1905 I think.
A shame as they are all restored by him and in A1 condition. He's had the Commando since 1973 (K) when he bought it from the old boys in Eldon Street in Southsea (I forget the name, Burnetts?) I swear it's the best example in Britain, if not the world.

Looks sunny over your way rom my window, I may well get out today.

Yup, the headlights are set way too high. It's actually dangerous - the cars I've been following actually have to pull over to let me pass and in the most dangerous places - I'm obviously blinding them.

Anyhoo - hopefully see you at the PWNN

Def loosen the chain to 35-40 mm.

You'll find the chain tightens when you take the bike off the stand, and put your weight on the saddle.

Hi boys. Loosened the chain and whatdayano, no noise! All was sweetness and smoothliness (although I wil check again with body sat on't saddle).
PWNN was full of Model T Fords, most charming and muchly sunshine. Lovely blast home on the Commando! Good though the new Sprint is, it cannot hold a candle to the Beautiful Hooligan that is The Magnificent Norton Commando. England's finest hour. A bit like a Gresley A4 Pacific. (Mallard to you. If you have to ask - you wouldn't understand!)
