Question for you Tiger folk. I'm thinking of getting a big trailie again. Had a GS and a Varadero in the past and now i am thinking of a TDM or a Tiger. Which is the best Tiger to go for? I would prefer a late plate 955, with cast wheels, or do i stump up the extra for a 1050? Any musings on the matter will be appreciated.

I've got a 1200GS Adventure. Owned a Tiger 955 & a TDM850. WTF is a Varadero? Sounds like some sort of Mexican dish

I think the 1050 is the better road bike, while the 955 has more of the look of an adventure type. Tho how far you'd want to travel off-road is another matter.

The 1050 is NOT A TRAILIE. It's a very good road bike, like a Fazer, or Bandit. The old 955 is more butch, and does actually go off road to a degree.

Fret is right - the new Tiger is not a Trailie. The 955 is styled that way but far too heavy for any serious slippy stuff. For me though it's become too much like lots of other upright, sports tourers. I've had two new 955s - 2003 to 2005, orange one with the spokes and 2005 to now, black one with cast wheels. I'm ready to change and if I could buy another brand new 955 I would. I've tried the 1050 and although it's good to ride it hasn't won me over. Cba - if you are looking for one - my 3 year old, 11K bike is going up for sale at the end of the month if you want to get in touch.

Go for the 1050 Tiger, got one to supplement my 02 Daytona as my body complains now on the Daytona after an hour or two. The Tiger is outstanding in terms of comfort, stonk, handling & can carry loads of luggage. I'm still always up front with the quick boys the only issue for me is I'm moving slowly to the pipe & slippers side with the addition of a top box. More seriously it is quite a handfull pushing it around when stopped compared to the Daytona but would imagine this applies to all similar bikes.

Depends what you want to do with it the old 955 model was a fantastic bike would tour effortlessly and scratch in the twisties. The Germans and French love'em, hell of a bike in the mountains. On a RAT raid in France over a mountain pass saw Harve deChamp leave 2 R1's for dead on a 955i Tiger. I'd have one but I'm a shortarse so no good for me. I only know of one person who's upgraded to the new 1050 tiger from the old one and they wished they had never changed.

I'm going to see what the INTERMOT show brings. Net gossip has a new Yamaha Super 10, so need to see if that happens or not. Thanks for all the advice anyway.

Wot Fret says - the old bike feels more substantial, i'm not convinced about the quality of the new bike, the old bike just feel bigger, but the new Tiger looks more modern, and the old one perhaps a bit dated. both great bikes. Ride em both , and possibly a Sprint ST, see what you can get for the money - a late Tiger should get you Luggage, centre stand etc - there's also a new Tiger SE coming with all the toys

Budget didn't stretch to a Tiger i'm afraid. So i got a TDM 900. Not a bad machine. Fun, fairly light and punchy. Thanks for all the feedback anyway.
