Ok, the story so far is this: Basically the situation is that I dropped the bike off needing an annual service (only 5000 miles on the bike but no service for 4 years/1000 miles), fluid change, any required recalls and new downloads, reset the CO settings and to sort out the rough running at idle and the cutting out when coming off throttle. I came to pick it up and they had done the annual service, changed the air filter, changed the fuel map (it had the wrong one, one for a 955 with second air system?), done fluids and then told me that it runs badly and they would advise fuel system cleaning additive and new plugs. They didn't recommend changing the fuel filter. The bike was still running badly at idle and cut out as soon as I tried to leave the workshop. Obviously this should have been sorted or at least they should have called me explaining the situation and asking if they can fit plugs. The place I used IS a Triumph dealership. The cost of the annual service, brake fluid (500ml?), oil, sump plug, oil filter and air filter was £195 with 2.25 hours of labour. Update: They have now had the bike for 7 days. Just got a call from them saying that they have done the following: New plugs Reset CO (is this the same as reset adaptive stepper?) Balanced throttle bodies Checked and reset throttle position sensor and the charge for this is £135! Surely they are taking the piss? Does anyone know how much a 2 year service would normally cost as it basically includes everything they've done(except for plugs)? If it was less thand £195 plus £135 then I reckon they are having a laugh.

They say they have, we'll see tomorrow when I pick it up. I just want to go in there knowing the full lowdown on what I should actually be paying!

Sounds about right. They have to remove the seat, remove the tail unit, remove the tank, remove the airbox, undo a multitude of connectors and then put it all back together.

you can only make a judgement on time spent after deducting spares etc and netting it of VAT I guess. I dont know of any 'fixed price servicing' to help give you a yardstick .....

As Bruce Hornsby would say................that's just the way it is. It's a fact - I do most of my own servicing and it's just how things are. Got a t5 Daytona? Need to replace an instrument bulb? Remove bellypan, remove both fairing panels, remove mirrors, remove upper fairing, remove headlights, remove entire instrument cluster.....now you can change that 20p bulb with a labour cost of about 1hour if the guy is quick, maybe more. BTW.....the ECU may be under the seat but the plugs are far, far less accessible.

To change plugs is about a half an hour job from start to finish; no more than an hour if you hit snags. Balance throttle bodies whilst you're in there about 10 minutes, change fuel map another 15 minutes (including taking seat off) so what 2 hours labour @ £35 an hour is £70, plugs @£12 a set so about £82 + vat so abit rich but it depends on their hourly rate.

My main issue is that the bike wentt in last Thursday for a service and work, it has been there since because they didn't bother to do the work as well as the service. And now they want to charge me labour again even though they were on the bike once already for the service.

Fair point AM.... Take it up with the service manager and complain mightily..... Tell them that your buying another Triumph hinges on the outcome of the decision..... AFAIAC that is sharp practice

Matter resolved: Went to pick up the bike today. Running fine, riding fine. They still wanted the £135 from me, told them how it was and managed to get it down to £63. They took the cost of my taxi there and back from my bill in that discount too (quite good). For my £63 I got new plugs, balanced throttle bodies, reset TPS, CO2 and lambda check. The service manager was reasonable to deal with, hence the £63, but, still odd to deal with and very "wishy washy", it doesn't instill confidence. FYInfo: I had water in No.1 and No.2 plugs. No.3 plug was black, probably a result of the bad map it had. Good final result but stress and embuggerance wasn't nice. There is a guy in Wallasey who races a 955 (I think) and he'll be doing my work from now on I think.

"I had water in No.1 and No.2 plugs. No.3 plug was black, probably a result of the bad map it had. " If you are reading the plugs left to right as sat on the bike, no 1 cylinder can get oily as the crank breather vents right about the t/b so it's not unusual.

Animal Mother: For my £63 I got new plugs, balanced throttle bodies, reset TPS, CO2 and lambda check. | That sounds v reasonable, but like you said they should have contacted you during the first service to address those issues; BTW what does "water in No.1 and No.2 plugs" mean ? sparks plugs are units, did the dealer saw them in half and water came out ??

All in all it was the result you wanted .... But does it instill you with enough confidence to take the bike back a second time...? I know what I'd be doing....!

I'll still be shopping for gear at that dealership because they do some good deals but I shall never entrust my silver machine with them ever again.

Yep. Good old Bill Smiths. You had experience of them? I was told that Mike Hose in Wallasey was a Triumph man but looks like he's on Aprilias now. Mike Hose Motorcycles Unit 27 Wheatland Business Park Wallasey CH44 7ER 0151 691 0769
