My bike will gradually overheat in traffic and the fan never comes on unless I shut the engine off. The fan then comes on and runs normally. What could be causing this?

the fan will only come on near the red on the gauge when the engine is running

it then comes on when you turn the engine off

It is definitely not normal as it will actually reach the point where it shuts off and the fan never comes on. Once I shut it off, it comes on and cools right down.

LWBSpeed2No, The fan should come on when the needle is somewhere indicating midrange...engine running. If the fan is running at shutdown, it should remain on. Very rarely do either of my Daytonas start the fan after the engine is shut off.

Go to bikebandit.com and take a look at the schematic.

are you saying that it never comes on in traffic or

are you saying that you turn the engine off as it approaches the red mark on the temp gauge so not letting the fan come on when the engine is running?

The fan cuts in at a higher temp when the engine is running. Your bike may not be getting that high.

It never comes on when the engine is running, even when it gets into the red. I have had it actually shut off in traffic a couple of times. It I switch it off, the fan comes right on and cools it down in seconds... I often shut it off at stoplights and let it cool while waiting for the light to change. From what I have seen on this site and others, it looks like I need to find someone with a tuneboy to recalibrate the temperature at which it comes on while running.

Will try the cap, flush and top off, thanks for all the feedback. As noted in my profile this is my first bike after about 20 years and I've really enjoyed it. Been to Deal's Gap a few times and Two Wheels Only in northern Georgia and it has ran awesome all the time... in the tight stuff it feels like a bike electric motor, just roll on the throttle and it never ceases to pull hard. It has a one tooth down countershaft sprocket and the factory carbon can and works pretty well. The carbon can has killed my gas mileage, mainly because I can't resist blipping the throttle on downshifts so I can hear the backfires (quite the show at night) and the sound when you rev hard is great.
Again, thanks for all of the great feedback.
