Sprint RS (00-01)
09 Oct 2008 18:52 |
Hi guys n girls, ive recently purchased a Sprint RS 2000 model V low milage, however when at a train corossing ive discovered that if the ignition on with lights on for more than 5 mins without the engine running the battery is too flat to turn the engine over and fire her up (turned the engine off as sat for more than 5 mins waiting for the invisable train to come or go and the temp was getting to 100c+) , i tried to then turn off all lights, indicators & put it in gear so there is minimal power being used and still not enough to start up. after a long push home and a re charge to the attery i tried this again and found the same thing. only a recharge would get her going again. Is this the normal ?? or does it sound like the battery is like a lady of the night (well Screwed) . reason i wonder is also have a thundercat and do not have this problem at all , but do realise there are differences between bikes, Incase it is of any use i do have a relay on the bike allowing both headlights to be iluminated, not too sure if they are the low or the high powerdrain ones as ive heard there are 2 types, the headlights dont apear to be standard as have a bright white look (similar to HID but there not HID lights) also the battery was put in 1 year ago and seems to be an unbranded Rob........ something or other, not one i have heard of. Any help much apriciated !!!!! P.s if you think i need a new battery can you recomnd a good brand ?????? Many Thanks Scott

Even if the h/lamps were 100 watt, 5 mins from an 14 AmpHour battery shouldnt kill it ! Turning the engine off will shut off the lamps anyway, why are you keying it back on ? It may have had a hard life and isnt really holding a charge well - you could get it tested, but frankly given its age you'd be best off getting a new 'un (AGM or GEL seem fav now - search the threads) IMHO

ah - just noticed its not that old, but even so, could be fecked .... also worth metering out what you're getting out of the Regulator etc .. One thread which has some bibs and bobs of info ... http://www.t595.net/messageboard/thread.asp?thread=3415.....acement+battery Also - try and find a thread from Rich Halford who put a lot of research into the whole subject ...

i turned the engine off but left the ignition on, so i only needed to pull the clutch in and fire her up when ready but there isnt enough power to fire it up. the headlights were on as the switch was in the on possition as was the ignition possition. Scott

thanks for the info §peêd†riÞ i will have a little hunt and see what i can find, ive cheked the volts through the battery 9connecting to + & - when the engine is running and getting 14ish volts, and 12.86 ish v when the battery is fully charged and not connected, i ran the bike for a few days and checked the volts when connected to the bike and still had 12.86ish v. is there another point where i can check the volts, im still awaiting a haynes manual so can locte parts on the bike. sounds OK then, again wondering if the battery is holding up - theres a few guys on here well versed in the electrics and diagnosis - try a new thread specifically for that last point you ask.

A fully charged 12v battery should put out about 13.5v....odd as that may sound

i think its to do with the cells on the battery , there should be 6 of them each putting out 2.2 volts each

Off load voltage readings are meaningless because of internal resistance in the battery. Readings when it's charging just tell you your charging's ok. Your battery's knacked, get a new one. I got a decent one for mine about five years ago, and then forgot about it.......

Scott, do remember that even without lights, the ECU will drain a fair bit of power. It does sound like a new battery is called for though. Paul T, how's things going, long time no hear ...

ST is correct the more excited the alternator gets the more juice it produces!

HOW MUCH???? Should have asked yer uncle Fret to get one. Batteries can, and do, die at any stage, plus it's not strictly the VOLTAGE that turns the bike over, you need AMPS and lots of them.

hey fret im hoping our not going to tell me i was ripped off, i had a good look around and £58 was the cheapest i could get that one for, most other places were asking £80. im not too much up on motorcycle electronics but discovered that CCA (something i had never heard of before) plays a big part so got the highest CCA i could find with a 14ahr capacity on 12v

C old C ranking A mps I dont think you've overpaid as such - the best online I've seen (allowing for whatever discount FretPoof can get) is from Tayna, and that was a bit more ! If you've got an AGM type, I wouldnt worry too much about money... they aint cheap - wwas just quoted £180 for th car, so got a top range VARTA non-AGM for £99 (80 Ah)

ouch @ £180, the battery i have got is an AGM got it from http://www.motorbikebatteries.co.uk/shop/svr14-ytx14bs-p-82.html, seemed to be one of the cheaper sites i could find, i did have a look at Tayna too from the link you posted earlier. was willing to pay up to £100 MAXIMUM for a VERY good quality battery. but s its the first time ive ever needed to buy a battery for a bike i had no idea where to start looking or what to look for. or what brands are known to be good quality, but i did see west co come up alot on searches so thought they may not be too bad a quality.

£36.00 comes to mind for a YTX14 battery.

its a shame you didnt post earlier fret i would have bitten your hand off for a SVR14 - YTX14-BS (agm) battery at that price.
