Last week my engine management light came on, took it into Jack Lilley's main dealership who at first diagnosed a broken fan - but the fan used to cut in nicely at 104 degrees C - and have now diagnosed a broken ECU since they fitted a new fan and it didn't solve the engine management light coming on.

They told me a new ECU is £1,000.... as they tried fitting a spare ECU they had and the engine management light didn't come on....

They've since disconnected the fan from the ECU and fixed a manal switch to the handlebars that I can switch on myself in traffic. Its effective but ugly.

So here's my question: Is it possible to reboot or wipe an ECU in the hope that it clears this fault?

Failing that does anyone have a spare ECU they would part exchange or sell to me? Apparantly its a Sagem ECU and they're the same for any triple from 99-04.

I'm happy to take it to someone who could help reprogram or format the firmware and pay for their services etc, I just don't want to fork out a Grand at this point.

Some of you may know my bike, I bought it from my former neighbour Nick Downes, its an '02 CE Daytona 955i in Silver, the only one of its kind....

Thanks

Steve

Welcome Steve
Is the ONLY problem in the control of the fan?
If so easy enough to fit a thermostatically controlled fan and lose the bar switch...

Jimmyj - that's a good idea, I'll have a search on the forum now, but if you know of a product out there to purchase, I'd appreciate a URL or link. Thank you!

Kevm. You're quite correct. That's Nick (Dog) and the bike.

Fixed it

Bought a new ECU off of eBay from a chap in Swindon for £26, got it fitted and the latest map put on by Jack Lilley's and it works beautifully......

Spoke to a few breakers who didn't inspire me with confidence at all 'oh yes, all the crashed bikes we buy in have the Engine Management light on on the clock when we buy them but ours are all fully tested... so how do you test them? Errrr. I dunno......'

The electrical fan fitted with a switch on the handlebars was getting me down. It worked, but it just was too untidy.

Thanks for everyone's advice, but the old ECU was knackered and the replacement one I bought is just great.....

i posted this in the sport group but maybe some one will find it here.
last week i mentioned that the RPS's were sticking at 3000.

a friend suggested i start the bike , let it run for a few seconds , turn it off and disconnect the neg. lead from the battery and start it again .
he thinks this will send any mapping back to default.???????

also....i wonder if the change in altitude might be effecting the current mapping or the power commander....as i'm not at sea level but 5600 feet....any thoughts?
this is so frustrating as the weather has been so great and i hate the fact that i just dumped $3000 for a bike i cant ride.
i may just offer all four triumphs and but a top of the line honda......no boo's please....if you've ever owned one you know they are pretty much bullet proof. thanks for any advice or thoughts you guy's might have ,

Thought about removing the PC and going back to Std for a base line? Good luck

Hi Mick,

If its not something like a worn/sticking/poorly adjusted throttle cable or twist grip which i assume you eliminated then quite possibly the ICV (idle control valve) is stuck in the wide open position/and or the associated pipework is leaking in air. The ICV problem is not uncommon as they get bunged up with gunge from the airbox if the air filter hasn't been changed regularly and seize or the little servo motor inside dies, sometimes a good clean with carb cleaner/WD40 brings them back to life..Try pulling off the ICV supply pipe from the bottom of the airbox and crimp/seal the end. If the bike then idles normally you know the ICV is dead, if not you'll need to check the associated pipework by removing it---see below..

If you're confident getting stuck in there, try taking off the tank and air box, then pulling off the black pipes that connect the ICV to the throttle bodies, blank of the stubby pipe ends left on the TB with a short length of fuel pipe crimped at the open end. With the tank connected and back in position - (don't bother with the air box yet just make sure the sensors are still connected or you'll get the ECU fault light up on the clocks) then fire her up and I'll bet she'll idle straight away. Then check eBay for a spare pipes/ICV!

If you're not confident getting stuck in there-call your nearest bike garage!!

PS or it could just be Gods way of punishing you for having such superb weather while the rest of us suffer.....
