The new 2009 has got a new big bang firing order, great as i dont like the sound of conventional 4 cylinder- but bad if Triumph copy and end up with a triple that sounds like a twin. For me the sound of a triple is 95% of why i love them.

That must be one of the most boring introductory videos ever. And again, the styling is plain awful.

Sigh...

This is more or less how you shoud introduce a new model, whatever the merits of that model I might add.

Mmm.. still looks boring to me. They could have put a half decent pilot on the MV maybe? What a dope.

This is more like it.. and I'm hardly a KTM-fan by the way..

Nice progress on the '09 R1 though.. sure to be a hoot on the track. What is this 'styling' you speak of?

I was using "styling" as a generic, meaningless term. No more, no less.

Look up the 312R video at Jerez. Smooth and fast...

Apologies- though i was in the Hinckley Arms.

If someone made an M1 replica seat and you put on a normal side exit exhaust, it would look miles better.

Got the technology list completed; big bang, ram air, 2 stage velocity stacks, 3 setting ignition maps- all with full power.

Don't understand what all the fuss is about..... Triumph have been producing bikes that can go 'big bang' for years!!!

The 180 Jota was effectively a big bang triple motor - one down and two pistons up during the firing sequence.

Mmmmm

Best Vid: RC8 one, easily. Shame it's such an ugly bastard

I like R1's and MV's.
The MV is by far the prettiest bike, but it also has a price tag to match. The R1 is the only one I'd consider buying.

Right,
I've considered it and she says NO!

That Aprilia is way too generic Jap looking, too many weird sharp edges and the seat looks crap.

ST: this is Hinckley gossip :

Bless you for staying faithful to the noble cause, ST.

I think the fact that so many people are talking about other marques speaks volumes about Triumph's current marketing philosophy regarding the litre sportsbike market though.

Now, where's that '09 UJM/Italian/Austrian brochure gone...

I would have to agree that as other makes are expanding their lines, Triumphs line seem abit stale. I love the new street triple R, but hardly a new model.

Hardly stale really, it just lacks a litre sportsbike.

And a 1050 Speed Triple R with top spec suspension etc...

I still can't get my head round the fact that they've failed to do this over the S3's long history (well over a decade), but within mere seconds of introducing the Street Triple there's an R version available. OK, it's not quite the full Monty, but it's definitely a gesture in the right direction.

I have no doubt it's a cracking little bike, too - but unfortuntely too little for me.

While I live in hope of them - one day - making a full-on, top spec S3, along with the big Daytona replacement, I fear my hopes will be dashed.

Time will tell, I guess...

I have no doubt that you're right, ST.

The decision to concentrate on the 600cc and cruiser sectors of the market is almost certainly based on profit rather than the sort of passion that has seen companies produce truly iconic bikes - just because they can.

It's a shame, as I know that Triumph is full of passionate people, and it certainly seemed that, in the earlier days, that came to the fore, but I guess the reality today is that you've got to survive and turn a profit in an increasingly cut-throat market, so throwing huge quantities of cash at specials and an already congested litre sportsbike sector isn't really going to float the bean-counters' boats.

But I'm sure that when a sufficient cash buffer has been accrued Triumph will decide to say "Fuck it. Let's go crazy apeshit. G-Man wants a tricked up S3 and a 190bhp British sportsbike - let's build the bastards for him."

I think that's the way it's going to go, anyway.

Yes - but because that is a direct result of heart over head, they tend to have a super-loyal following of deeply appreciative customers and fans.

That's worth a hell of a lot, and bigger companies recognise that, which is why you see so many being rescued and/or resurrected.

Hence the recent MV Augusta buyout, to name just one.

Some may argue that's not such a good thing, but I'd rather live in a world in which MV Augusta existed (albeit owned by HD) than one devoid of their bikes.

Not sure about cruisers but I'm pretty sure the Street Triple doesn't make them much profit.
Could be a reason they're still in short supply, why make loads of a model with a low profit margin.
Tho I'll bet there's more profit on the new 'R' model.

It does sound rather nice.
An IL4 with "character".

Pity that by the time it hits these shores no one will have the money to buy a second hand Grifter..
