Word on the street is that J-Zues and Depth Charge Ethel are up for a bit of a Brands bargy on Oct 8th.

There's no way the mighty GSX-R and I are going to miss that, so I've just booked.

There were 10 places left in inters (not sure about other classes) when I booked, and the cost is £135 with Focused Events (http://www.focusedevents.com/).

So come on you soft southern bastards - let's be 'avin yer!

No worries, D-Man - no doubt will catch up with you at another track (though probably not while actually on it - you look a bit too quick for that).

Fret - you all right? You seem a bit down about motorcycling of late. Hope everything's OK.

Personally, I can't think of anything I'd rather be doing in this country than riding my bike as fast as possible without fear of prosecution by the system. And like 'em or loathe 'em, track days are the only way.

Unless, of course, your numberplate should happen to drop off unexpectedly.

Apparently you get that a lot on these K7s...

I thought you already had?

But whatever, splendid - that's the spirit laddie!

Will no doubt see you before to discuss pincer-movement strategies against the scheming J-Zeus.

Perhaps a small nip would be in order this weekend, weather permitting, of course...

A good trip abroad I trust. Having read one of your recent threads I note it was a comfortable one.

Tell me, are we taking the bridal suite again ? If so, you can bring the industrial tubing, vacuum pump and hired ferret this time.

Excellent! (That you're coming, not that you're crapping yourself.)

Everyone does get a few butterflies on their first track day, it's quite natural - but if you think about it, it's every time you ride on the road that you should crap yourself. The track is the safest place to ride - grippy surface, no diesel, no oncoming traffic, no gatsos, police, etc - just you and a few other like-minded souls circulating at a pace they individually feel comfortable with.

Five minutes into the first session you'll be loving it...

Apart from all the usual stuff bear two things in mind to stay safe. As is the company name, Focused, it is good policy. You'll be going ( as the pace picks up ) faster then you normally go when approaching corners - which is fine, but you really need to keep up concentration ( stay focussed ). It's when you loose concentration and the corner is 'suddenly' upon you that things can go pear shaped.

The other thing is not to get competative - it is NOT a race*. You're there to go at your own pace regardless of what others are doing. If they are faster then you it's their responsibility to pass you safely - hence no mirrors needed. Likewise yours if you are passing others.

Heres a good link

http://londonbikers.com/forums/Topic3806-34-1.aspx

Another thing is ALWAYS get around three laps in to get heat into the tyres before pushing it.

In the meantime, good luck with the pipe. I can recommend a good Dutch shag if you need it...

Ah, but used anything but judiciously, the much revered Juju juice can work for and against a person, J-Zeus san. Remember, power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely... (Wise man he say, etc...)

Joshing aside, I'm seriously just looking forward to a bit of a nip around the Hatchery - especially as it looks like the gods are with us weather wise on Weds. (Haven't been there since April, when I was somewhat dismayed to be passed at impressive speed in the pissing rain by small children on pit bikes.)

Fingers crossed, anyway...

Alas the heron is no more. It has ceased to be. It has expired and gone to meet its maker. It's a stiff! Bereft of life, it rests in peace. If my neighbour hadn't nailed it to the garage roof it'd be pushing up the daisies. Its metabolic processes are now history. It's off the twig, it's kicked the bucket, it's shuffled off this mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible. It is an ex-heron...

Etc...

By the way, 'Slide 'n Ride' is a proprietary brand of rather natty knee accouterments that some folk like to wear in preference to grinding their patellas to powder when leaning over in the bendy bits.

What on earth did you perverts think it was?

I'd hack over to your place but I've got a fair bit to do and don't fancy rush-hour Chi, so how about a Sainsbury's roundabout compromise?

Other suggestions gratefully received.

But let's keep an eye on this band of rain that's currently assailing us. It's supposed to clear later, so pointless setting off in it if it's going to be buggering off. That said, if you're actually wearing your wets it will at least save me having to take avoiding action when you deploy them from an open rucksack at 110mph...

Great ST - fucking top day.

I got there to find Dick C waiting there for Peter Pellatt to clock off from his night shift and deliver his bike / tool kit / diagnostic computer / and biscuits.

Peter kept him waiting and waiting and waiting and Richard was looking a bit worried.

G and DCE arrived after sleepign off a £600 dinner the night before - followed by god-knows-what once the booze kicked in.... Needless to say their gait was shall we say, somewhat 'stiff'.

We lined up to get noise tested, and the guy next to me on a Duke was sporting a lower leg cast That in my book is 'dedication' - only topped by the guy in the Advanced group with one arm

We had the briefing - which DCE eventually decided to turn up too. And they were off.........

As Dicke C was new to the track, he decided to celebtate the event in style with an early on trip into the kitty litter at Paddock Hill But got off with it quite lightly with minimal damage, and was back on track in no time.

G and I were in the Inters group - and I was intrigues to see if the money spent on his UJM was money well spent. Well I can report that once he's chosen from his vast range of settings* he was a "linea retta dio"

Needless to say he was in his element on Brabhams Straight

I must confess to letting out a chuckle as I overtook him when he took a somewhat 'unique' line at Druids -
but my grin was soon wiped off my face when just round the corner I almost ran into a chap walking his bike off the track after a high-side.

The morning sessions was getting to be a little ' crash tastic ' and a man came on the tanoy to tell us so and to 'cool it' - this clarion call was answered by some knob over cooking it on the warm up lap of the very next session. Or trackday leader was not best pleased - and we fully expected a mass bollocking, but it never happened.

Vinces Daytona was getting progressively shinier and more polished after each session - and we strongly suspected that he had a stash of Turtle Wax© products stash near Surtees

The afternoon sessions were blessed with warm temperatures and sunny skies - with less 'offs'. The BSB outfits were starting to arrive, and we suspect to pick up some riding tips from us....

We went home happy and content - to dream of our prospective MotoGP careers

Great post me ol' mucker. Many thanks for up this flagging this event . I had a superb day - it just got better and better. My times also improved, dropping from 5 mins 14s down to 2mins 13 I believe. All down to an Empire Made bike you know, which I note is conspicuous by its photographic absence .

Richard, It was a pleasure to meet you. Hopefully we'll meet up again. Next spring maybe.

G and I had a good run home avoiding speed traps and the like. At least we think so.

No - the 1 to 6 refer to G's GSXR 9,000,000 ECU performance level switch settings

Ah right. Yes indeed The G man has many varied settings available, they serve his quest for ever more pinning. However he still has not found any setting that can match the style and penache of Bog Standard Bob, aka CT!

Was he able to demonstrate his 'backing off technique', its something to behold so I'm told.

As the mighty J-Zeus intimated above, I did in fact have to 'back-off' a tad when I locked the front then back wheels coming in a bit too hot into Druids (thus giving J-Zeus a rare opportunity to overtake ).

Somewhat fortuitously, my short-lived diversion towards the litter meant that I avoided an almost certain collision with the high-siding Kawasaki in front of me. The Force was indeed with me on that occasion.

Cracking day though - everything I was hoping for. Unbelievable weather, great company, and fantastic fun. After the shit weather we've been having I had to keep pinching myself. (Mainly to keep awake after a night of DCE's usual incessant snoring, which has moved on from the world-acclaimed sinal renditions of the Serengeti to an altogether more graunchy and guttural impression of a gorilla in the throes of carnal ecstasy...).

I hate Druids - dropped an H1 there years back, and then did it again the following season scrubbing in tyres on that 460 Yoshi Honda in me album !

so what sort of lap times GSXR vs Gaytona ?

I love Druids - despite it almost being my nemesis on so many occasions - but can fully understand why you're not its biggest fan, ST.

Re lap times, that's not what trackdays are about. With so many people of so many different abilities/speeds, you can never get a clear lap in due to the traffic and bunching (unless you're a nutter and happy to carve others up).

But Richard did time a few of our laps at around the 1m 1 sec to 1m 3sec mark (I think). To put it in context, at a recent classic bike race apparently some guy on a 750 Trident was posting 53 sec laps (I may have that wrong, but PP has the details).

As always the mighty J-Zeus and I were evenly matched where it matters, in the corners, but not surprisingly the GSX-R's mumbo saw it naffing off on the straight bits (hence J's avatar).

Main thing is we were still able to ride our bikes home in one piece afterwards - unlike 12 or so folk to whom the words "Warm your tyres for three laps" were translated as "Pin it to the stop straight out of the pits."

You have to laugh though. And we did....

Funnily enough, the rude boys keen on "stuffing it on the inside" seemed to be predominantly ducati riders

- more crowded than I'd realised then - ref lap timings etc.

Back in the days of yore, we used to buy an afternoon at Brands for peanuts - courtesy of the Bantam Racing Club and the Newmarket Club - the day i mentioned, there were about 8 of us all afternoon !

I got my figures a bit mixed up in fact G-San, not by much though. The 750cc fastest lap was 54.47 by Ricky McMillan on a Rob North replica T150 Trident. However, a chap called Lea Gourlay lapped in 53.05 on a 500cc Manx Norton (I guess about 60bhp) and on his bored and stroked 930cc Rob North Trident (probably about 95-100 bhp) in 52.13.

There's a couple in there that make me laugh that are maybe worthy of a small caption competition.

I particularly like this one. DCE was blissfully unaware of the comedy baboon's arse we'd glued to his Furryglands leathers, but the expression on the two chaps to the right gives the game away...

Had another look through Saturday's programme and Mr Gourlay does in fact hold the 750cc lap record too (although it was established last year) also on a Trident, can't remember the exact time but it was 52 point something ..... he's good !!
