A good mate of mine has a very nice W reg S3. He turned into a school entrance to drop some papers off and noticed that the local Council (bellends) had seen fit to put a really maniacal speed hump at the entrance. Well, he stood up on the pegs (as you do) to ride over it...It ripped his sump off ( ) and dumped 4 lires of Putoline Syntec 4 over his back tyre... He was only doing about walking speed and did n`t come off. Hopefully his engines ok as he hit the kill switch straight away but he`s going to be claiming for a new tyre (his was 100 miles old) along with the rest of the bits. His suspension is standard and not lowered in any way so the bike isn`t any lower than stock. Surely there`s a minimum height that the Council have to abide by with these infernal speed humps? He reckons if that had been me on my T595 I`d have lost the belly pan as well as the sump!... Hopefully the twats will pay for the damage without having to resort to the Courts. So a warning...It seems that they can put speed humps at whatever height they want, it seems to depend on the stars or wether Mars is in conjunction with Uranus (not Ducatimans I hope) and how many beers the workmen have had at lunchtime. Something to remember before you go over one on the jolly old Triumph By the way, it was one of those metal ones..Nasty!...

He got some pictures of the whole sorry affair on his camera phone. We`ll just have to wait and see the outcome, The bikes been taken away for assessment so hopefully that`s a good sign.

They'll tell him to f**k off. My local council appears to have a policy of rejecting all claims until litigation starts : I know this because their insurers rejected my claim before they'd even seen a picture of the pothole I hit. They reckoned the road was in a satisfactory condition and had recently been inspected, so despite not even seeing the evidence they rejected my claim. The insurance companies are complicit in this sham too as they'd just rather pay-up on your fully comp that go through claims. That's a 1ft steel ruler in that pothole BTW and I measure it at 5 inches deep Photo Album Image Photo Album Image

He`ll take them to court if they dont pay up. The thing is that if there had been a sign saying `No Motorcycles` then the Council would have a very strong case and could tell Ian to swivel. But in the abscence of such a sign (motorcycles are allowed by the way) surely it`s the Councils duty to see that the speed hump is `fit for purpose` ie, to slow traffic as opposed to potentially destroying the engine of said vehicle. And what about the oil slick over his rear tyre? What if he`d come off and hurt himself? Surely they`d have to admit liability for his injuries? That hump has surely proved itself a `dangerous` obstruction? So where was the sign telling motorcyclists of this fact? I`d say my mate Ian has a reasonable chance...I hope so anyway or this just means that the Council can theoretically let things go to `rack and ruin` and if anyone complains or gets hurt the Council can tell them to go and swivel...

He probably has got a case but they'll still tell him to f**k off until he starts litigation.

If anyone likes I can scan in a TRL Advisory note on speeds humps, thumps and tables. It's a good overview guide to design geometry that could be used in a court of law.

Someone I know had an exhaust ripped off a Mini, (not lowered) on one of those ramps that actually rise, out of the ground. I'm sure she managed to claim for repairs.
